The modern school system this designed to effect an educational product- that is the education of your child. A great deal of technical innovation is used as well as a tremendous number of highly trained staff to achieve this. However, the piece which is left out of this child centred learning environment is a direct role for parents.

I am convinced that as a tutor/teacher, I have to work under the authority of you as the parent of your child. Therefore, I will set him or her homework and then if the work is not done on time, I will ask the parents to give just but effective consequences. The particulars of these consequences are up to the parents who know their children well enough to make the discipline most effective.  There is a remarkable dynamic when I, as a teaching professional, work directly with parents to achieve effective and just discipline. Further, when it comes to a detailed and through knowledge of their child, the parents are the best authority. I find the parents are the best resource for overcoming the sometimes difficult problems a child’s education can present. It does indeed take a village to raise a child but the parents are the by far the most critical part of that village. As a teacher I value a symbiosis with parents which might be expressed by the principal found in Ecclesiastes 4:12 ”Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

This allows me to offer to parents a more direct part in their child’s education, often participating in significant advances in their child’s education.
